The task for this webquest is to align yourself with one of the main characters in the story Sarah, Plain and Tall and create a journal as one of the characters in the story. You may choose Sarah, Jacob, Anna or Caleb. Make an individual choice and choose the character you want to become as you create your journal.

You will:

  • explore the prairies and Maine
  • create a journal (chapter summaries) of what you think their thoughts feelings and reactions would be to the events of the story
  • include various aspects of Maine and prairies that you will investigate via web sites listed
  • develop a vocabulary list with the use of an on-line source.
  • make predictions of coming events
  • create concise summaries of chapters
  • discover character traits of Sarah, Jacob, Anna and Caleb whoever you are choosing to become
What will the journal look like?
  • Your journal will be an individualized piece of work that includes all of the above information. Your ideas about the character you are identifying with is the key. You MUST put yourself in place of the character as you read the novel. It is imperative that you concentrate on your characters thoughts and feelings throughout the reading of the book.
  • The look of the journal is up to you. It must have the following parts:
  1. A unique cover. Quilting, hand drawn pictures can decorate the cover. You must include your name, the name of the person you are writing as and the title of the book.
  2. A vocabulary list. Each page in this webquest will have vocabulary words for you to include in your vocabulary list. You will also find an on-line source linked to the word. You will need to enter the word once you get to the on-line source.
  3. A prediction of selected coming chapters. Following the reading of selected chapters you will write a one sentence prediction of what you think will happen next.
  4. A summary of selected chapters groups. You will need to write a summary for selected chapter groups. The summary needs to be ten sentences long and written in cursive. At the time of this story students in school would have learned to write in cursive at an early age. Since we are going to create these journals in an authentic manner, cursive is a must.
  5. A reaction paragraph of selected chapters. In this section you need to think about how the character you are assuming would be feeling about these events. Sometimes the book will tell you and sometimes you will have to infer the character's feelings.
  6. A picture section. In this section of your journal you will create pictures of how Sarah describes Maine and the sea or different scenes in the book. Use the web sites to get ideas.
